Thoughts on ending a novel

A few days before the NaNo month ended, I wrote a meditation on the experience of ending a novel for The Writers’ Vineyard, the blog where Champagne authors share thoughts about writing, and life.

Here’s an excerpt:

I know the ending will bring loss; I know it will bring forgiveness. I don’t know (yet) which characters will survive. I hope Licky the black lab will survive; after all, her giant dog heart holds the key to love and forgiveness that all the humans need to find. It seems only fair that she gets to go on to a good, long, and comfortable life. But we’ll see – one of the joys of creative writing is the surprises it brings, right up to the end.
