Fearless Hearts and Great Pumpkins, One More Time

Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin

Linus waits in his oh so sincere pumpkin patch.

Every so often, I recycle this little post from Halloween 2010. There are a lot of Lucies in this world, who offer only ridicule. But Linus reminds us of the lesson of the Great Pumpkin: let go of disappointment and let yourself hope (or love) again, no matter how ridiculous it seems to sensible people.

“To get through this life with any kind of self-respect at all, you need two things: an inquisitive mind, and a fearless heart.” –Steve Earle.

Like Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin – Linus has a fearless heart, one that’s been broken many times before, and he just comes back for more. You could call that kind of faith and optimism stupid, like Lucy does. And you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. But for some reason tonight I’m hoping against hope that the Great Pumpkin visits me on Halloween night and leaves me a fearless heart, too.

The other night I talked to an old friend I hadn’t seen in ages, and was reminded of his fearless heart. So Scott, this year,  I dedicate the Steve Earle song to you –
