Inspired by the toast from the groom to all the guests at a wedding I attended over the weekend, this piece is called “I Want.” The groom is one of the most genuinely kind and generous people you’ll ever meet, and when he said friends and family are everything to the newly-wed couple, he meant it. And when he said “so if you ever want for anything, just ask,” he meant that, too.
I Want
I want world peace and an end to conflict among the world’s religions
I want love to last
I want doughnuts to be health food
I want to read a new book every night
I want to re-create myself every day
I want everyone in the world to have a home that keeps them safe, dry, and warm, a place where they can sleep, eat, talk, and make love in private
I want every dog in the world to have a home that keeps them safe, dry, and warm, a place where they can sleep, eat, and wag their tails with joy
I want this planet to survive our stay on it
I want clean air and water, water everywhere
I want cute shoes that don’t hurt my feet
I want all of us with first world problems about shoes and doughnuts to stop for a day and put all the energy we spend on our first world problems about shoes and doughnuts into giving clean air, water, homes, food, to all
So that the next time someone says “if you want for anything, just ask”
The biggest want anyone can think of
In that moment
Is for doughnuts.
