In honor of our annual celebration of MLK Jr’s contributions, I read through some of his more famous quotes. This one spoke to me today.
“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
Six years ago this weekend I started writing the story that became An Alien’s Guide to World Domination. It’s no coincidence there’s a theme in the book that reflects this quote. Only I’m not a brave person, so the main protagonists in the story aren’t that brave either. They do what’s right anyway, with each other’s help, because they’ve all felt this kind of soul-wounding. We’ve all felt it.
With one another’s help, we can all do what’s right, even when we are afraid.
